Befitting / Like a proper

Target: 답게 (dapge)

Theory
PracticeSoon

intermediate

Says something behaves as its own nature or role demands.

Usage

Attached directly to a noun, no vowel/consonant change: 학생답게, 남자답게.

The adjective form is 답다: 그 사람은 정말 어른답다.

Example:

학생답게 행동하세요. (Behave like a student should).

Nuance

처럼 compares you to something you are not: 학생처럼 보여요 (You look like a student — but you aren't one).

답게 says you are that thing and are living up to it: 학생답게 공부해요 (You study as a student ought to).

Because it carries approval, 답게 is a compliment by default: 봄답게 따뜻하네요 (It's warm, just as spring should be).

In Context

그는 프로답게 경기했어요.

He played like a true professional.

답게 솔직히 말해.

Speak honestly, like you always do.

오늘은 여름답게 정말 덥네요.

Today is really hot, just like summer should be.
