The 서 often drops

In conversation, people very often leave off the 서 seo and say just 한테 hante. The verb makes the direction clear:

  • 친구한테 들었어요. chinguhante deureosseoyo "I heard it from a friend."
  • 친구한테 말했어요. chinguhante malhaesseoyo "I told a friend."

Hearing and receiving point toward you, so 한테 means "from". Telling and giving point away, so it means "to". The 에게, 한테, 께 lesson covers the "to" side.

People, places, and formal sources

Korean picks a different "from" depending on what the source is:

  • A person: 한테서 or 에게서. 동생한테서 받았어요. dongsaenghanteseo badasseoyo "I got it from my younger sibling."
  • A place or a company: 에서 eseo. 학교에서 연락이 왔어요. hakgyoeseo yeollagi wasseoyo "The school got in touch."
  • A formal or abstract source: (으)로부터 (eu)robuteo. 정부로부터 지원을 받았습니다. jeongburobuteo jiwoneul badatseumnida "We received support from the government."

So if the source isn't a living being, 한테서 is the wrong choice.
