Written vs spoken
(으)로부터 sounds like a letter, a news report or an official notice. In conversation, the same idea uses everyday particles: 한테서 hanteseo for a person and 에서 eseo for a place or a company.
- 학교로부터 안내문을 받았습니다. hakgyorobuteo annaemuneul badatseumnida "We received a notice from the school." Written.
- 학교에서 안내문 받았어요. hakgyoeseo annaemun badasseoyo "I got a notice from the school." Spoken.
If you'd say it to a friend, you almost never need 로부터. For people, the 에게서 lesson covers the spoken choice.
Often "by" in English
With verbs built on 받다 batda, "to receive", 로부터 often comes out in English as "by". Korean thinks of it as receiving something from someone:
- 그 배우는 팬들로부터 사랑받고 있어요. geu baeuneun paendeullobuteo sarangbatgo isseoyo "That actor is loved by his fans."
- 선생님으로부터 칭찬을 받았어요. seonsaengnimeurobuteo chingchaneul badasseoyo "I was praised by my teacher."
