Trying Something

Target: 아/어 보다 (a/eo boda)

Theory
PracticeSoon

intermediate

Indicates trying an action out, or having experienced it before.

Usage

Stem ends in ㅏ/ㅗ아 보다 (가다 → 가 보다).

All other vowels → 어 보다 (먹다 → 먹어 보다).

하다 verbs → 해 보다 (시도하다 → 시도해 보다).

Example:

이거 한번 먹어 보세요. (Please try eating this).

Nuance

Present tense = attempting: 입어 볼게요. (I'll try it on).

Past tense = experience: 제주도에 가봤어요. (I've been to Jeju Island).

보다 already means "to see", so the literal sense is "do it and see what happens" — that is exactly the nuance it carries.

Never use it with 보다 itself: say 봤어요, not 봐 봤어요.
