읽다 + 기

기 or 는 것?

Both turn a verb into a noun, but they aren't used in the same places. Set patterns always take 기, while 는 것 works almost anywhere else and can also mean "the thing that":

  • 이 책은 읽기 쉬워요. i chaegeun ilgi swiwoyo "This book is easy to read." A set pattern, so 기.
  • 지금 읽는 건 소설이에요. jigeum ingneun geon soseorieyo "What I'm reading now is a novel." "The thing that", so 는 것.

Grammar built on 기

You've probably met 기 already inside other patterns:

  • 기 전에: 자기 전에 jagi jeone, "before sleeping"
  • 기 때문에: 바쁘기 때문에 bappeugi ttaemune, "because I'm busy"
  • 기로 하다: 가기로 했어요 gagiro haesseoyo, "I decided to go"
