로써 vs 로서
The two look and sound nearly the same, and the spelling trips up native speakers too. The meaning is different:
- (으)로써 is a means: "by" or "through".
- (으)로서 (eu)roseo is a role: "as".
The classic mix-up:
- ✗학생으로써 열심히 공부해야죠. haksaengeurosseo yeolsimhi gongbuhaeyajyo
- ✓학생으로서 열심히 공부해야죠. haksaengeuroseo yeolsimhi gongbuhaeyajyo "As a student, I should study hard."
If English says "as a …", it's 로서. If it says "by" or "through", it's 로써.
음으로써: "by doing"
To use a verb as the means, turn it into a noun with (으)ㅁ (eu)m and add 으로써. This is very common in formal writing:
- 책을 읽음으로써 생각이 넓어져요. chaegeul ilgeumeurosseo saenggagi neolbeojyeoyo "Reading broadens your mind."
- 서로 대화함으로써 오해를 풀었어요. seoro daehwahameurosseo ohaereul pureosseoyo "We cleared up the misunderstanding by talking."
In conversation, you'd say the same thing with 면 myeon or 서 seo: 책을 읽으면 chaegeul ilgeumyeon, "if you read".
